The gardens at the Beacon have always been very special, but this year, thanks to a grant from The Big Lottery fund, our garden volunteer project finally got underway. The aim of the project is for volunteers, including service users, to work together to transform the garden, working sensitively with the existing space.

The plan is to create a garden of year round interest, including tranquil areas, where people can sit with family and friends in private and restorative surroundings. Our volunteer group has made an incredible difference over the past few months, creating a beautiful space for both flowers and vegetables. Raised beds, to support a small kitchen garden have been added, so the kitchen can look forward to cooking with fresh seasonal produce. There are plans to develop the balconies outside each in-patient room, so those clients who cannot manage to get outside, can enjoy a little bit of the garden coming to them. The front of the Beacon will also receive some TLC, creating a welcoming space, using parameter fences to support wildlife.

The experience amongst our existing volunteer group ranges from lots, to little or none, but all have brought incredible passion & zeal. We are so grateful for their dedication and hard work. This project is constantly evolving and everyone is welcome to volunteer, whether service users or from the general public and no previous experience, just a sense of enthusiasm is needed. If you are interested in this project please contact The Sussex Beacon on 01273694222.
